The first thing you should do when finding a dog is check for tags!
Petsmart, Vets and shelters will scan for microchips if you find a pet. Please bring them there if you find one.
Take good pictures and post in this neighborhood app called nextdoor and ALL of these Facebook sites.
Not everyone knows they are all there. Typically, only 1 or 2 sites are looked through. If you plan to hold the animal, you must actively search for the owners. You also must take a picture and description to the shelter to add to their binder within 24 hours of finding. This is helpful for owners looking for their pet.
The shelters should be last resorts but, if you must, put your name down.
If no one comes for the dog, and no one adopts, the shelter will call upon you to save its life. There are 3 shelters in Bakersfield You must take the dog to the shelter that is in the same county as your address on your ID. If you are a city resident, then it must be the shelter on Mt. Vernon. If you are a County resident, must be the shelter on Fruitvale. The SCPA will take dogs except for seniors and pitbulls. They charge a fee for intake.
All shelters are kill shelters, unfortunately.
Before you decide to adopt a pet you find the law says you should check for a microchip, report the dog to the shelters, post flyers and posters where you found, post on social media sites and craigslist. This has to be done shortly after found and you must wait 15 days prior to adoption.
